Opal’s Walk for Freedom

The Justice Journey Alliance, Leadership Foundation of Chicago (JJALFOC) is honored to be selected as the Host organization in the City of Chicago for Opal’s Walk for Freedom.

On Wednesday, June 19th, JJALFOC along will Dallas, Los Angeles, and New York will complete the annual 2.5-mile walk starting at 31st Beach to recognize the 2.5 years it took for the news and enforcement of freedom to reach the enslaved people in Texas.

MISSION

Our mission is to educate, empower, and bring all Americans together to celebrate our common bond of freedom through the recognition, observance, education and historic preservation of Juneteenth in America.

PURPOSE

Proceeds benefit the community service programs of JJALFOC, Unity Unlimited, Inc. production and distribution of literature to educate the country about Juneteenth as well as supporting a capital campaign donation to the National Juneteenth Museum and its message of freedom.

wALK Route

Starting/End Point: 31st Street Beach, north to 18th St., and back to 31st Street Beach.  

Now a national holiday, Juneteenth celebrates the freedom gained when slavery was abolished all across the country. Unity Unlimited and Ms. Opal continue her walks to educate the nation on the importance of understanding that freedom is for everyone.
